I raced at Peterbotough and made the following observations:
Standard of racing was lower than in previous years
This included our crew, which was Pi55 p00r.
It rained a lot
Don't eat the noodles
Peterborough Juniors drank a lot and told us that "Peterborough is ***"
Warwick Uni drove over their tent rather than take it down.

Overall score
6/10

See you next year

That pretty much summed it up.

You KNOW that isn't true. Pots are but a part of the cost. More efficient use of the lake more than makes up for it.

Why are you an anti-eight fetishist?

I'm not, but to judge the quality of a regatta by looking at the eights events solely is ludicrous.

And yes even if you have to pay to hire the lake the costs of the prizes will be the major item of expenditure which can be recouped by bar/food sales from the extra bodies, but only to a minor extent. If you don't have to hire a course then the prizes will be by far the largest item of expenditure.

Chris, I'm sure you realise this is a very immature counter-argument.

Pots might be a variable cost, but all the fixed costs of holding a regatta will stay the same so the overall profit of a regatta will surely RISE with more eights as a % of races. Even if pots were the only cost of the day, I'm sure organisers would make sure that they weren't making a loss, so more competitors = more absolute profit, even if the % margin stays the same.

Also I'm not quite sure why you are keen to promote the idea that Peterborough is a fantasic place.

Fixed costs will not perhaps be the same. If you have more people on the water you need to assess whether you need more safety cover perhaps. Also at most venues boating capacity is the limiting factor and you just can't get the eights launched fast enough so your capacity is limited in that way too.

I've made no comments on the merits of Peterborough city, but it's not a bad place and the cathedral is quite pretty with some famous monuments, but then I went there to attend a regatta not to discuss the aesthetics of the place. And yes Peterborough is a well run and friendly regatta which delivers what it aims to set out to do.

You win events in finals and not in heats.

And you don't gain any respect by behaving like twunts. Show your opponents some respect and they may even come over and shake your hands afterwards and look forward to the next time they race you. But not if you behave like Nemesis (you?) did.

Had they known such rewards were on offer, maybe they would have stifled their celebrations. Hand shakes - blimey!

Who needs respect when you have medals. Concentrate on rowing better and steering in a straight line and you'll get the respect you crave.

Well done to them for winning, reversing their earlier result against the Lea and overhauling HSBC who had been quickest earlier in the morning.

They could have shown some class after the finish though. Their long period of whooping, punching the water, shouting "scratch crew, baby!" etc. etc. showed their opponents no respect at all. Perhaps they didn't realise just how many of them were likely to have been scratch crews too, but either way it was sickening. If you win, try and win well. I didn't see the Lea rubbing your noses in it after the heat.

***. I rowed in the City crew that got done by Nemesis in the final. I, and everyone in my crew, didn't have a problem in any way, shape or form with their post race celebrations. And I'm pretty sure that this "scratch crew baby", and punching water and suchlike didn't happen. They were gracious enough post race.

Having been in Nemesis' place earlier in the season (a crew I was in being criticised for "lack of respect", "arrogance", and all that), I'd be surprised if this critique came from anyone who'd been in the race.

More likely some punter on the side who's taken it upon themselves to get offended. Get a life.

Think you are getting your wires crossed here.

No one in the Lea crew is complaining about Nemesis' post race whatever. None of us mentioned it after the race - the person with the issue is someone else.

Someone up the thread pointed out we beat them earlier in the day and then they beat us in the final - fair enough, but again, not us.

I agree with AT here! Its only P'boro regatta. I never knew it was serious and thought that people were more interested in the p*ss up at the end...and what used to be the party...or are people taking it seriously!? Its only rowing and if your at Pboro regatta you either arent very good or dont take it seriously. What about when people scream and shout after winning a race at HRR...no one ever complains about that!

Also, clearly the rowing chat is seriously drying up if the hot topic of conversation was how a bunch of muppets celebrated after winning IM2 VIIIs at Peterborough!

I had heard that at the June Regatta there was a MASSIVE chav invasion and riot which involved lareg numbers of poilce and police helicopters, every window in the clubhouse being smashed and the tents torn down and all of the women being locked in the girls toilets for their own safety!

Sounds pretty messed up if it was true!

Sounds like Peterborough!
